Neither shortwave radio nor submarine cable offered the necessary broadband transmission capability and protection against eavesdropping, jamming and sabotage at the time. International calls had to be booked in advance and the call costs were enormous. New ways of transmitting via satellite open up completely new possibilities, such as broadcasting social and political events in real time to the whole world.

One of the most memorable experiences at the time was the on-site transmission of the moon landing, which was handled by radome elevations. The number of intercontinental telephone channels has also increased greatly, and the charges have become affordable: The communication culture and perception of the world has changed permanently.
